I have to clear some space on my shelves, so I need to part with some of my collection. THIS IS MY LAST ONE! Trumpeter made a name for themselves producing big scale tanks and aircraft carriers. Their USS Hornet was a landmark release and a tremendous success for them. They seemed to make it their mission to fill out their lineup of carriers and other capital ships, while improving their accuracy and detail with each release. The Admiral Hipper was the lead ship in her class of Panzer Schiff (sometimes called a pocket battleship or heavy cruiser). This is Trumpeter’s stellar kit of the Admiral Hipper as she appeared in 1941. Hipper had moderate success as a commerce raider but spent much of the war under repair. She survived the war (scuttled at her moorings in Kiel), just to be raised and scrapped shortly thereafter. The large scale of this model allows for considerable detail. I may even still have a listing for a nice Pontos wood deck (PON #35018WD1) for this kit. There are about a half-dozen of these kits listed on eBay (almost all from China), but as a Top Rated Plus US Seller, I have this in stock and can reliably ship this kit to you very quickly. Here is some of the information that I have found online about this classic pocket battleship kit: The trumpeter-china.com website has a page that shows the box art, full and waterline hull parts, sprues, PE parts, decals and even a set of clear Arado Ar196 floatplanes, along with 4 CAD renderings of an assembled model. They also provide a history of the Admiral Hipper and some basic specs on the kit: Admiral Hipper was launched on February 6th, 1937, and commissioned on April 29th, 1939. She was the lead ship of the Admiral Hipper class heavy cruisers. She took part in the German invasion of Norway. Then she broke out undetected into the Atlantic and operated as a merchant raider, based at Brest, France. She returned to Kiel via the Denmark Strait, arriving on February 28th, 1941. Modifications were made to increase fuel storage and hence her cruising range. On New Year’s Eve 1942, she took part in the German attack on convoy JW-51B, where she sunk a minesweeper and a destroyer. At last, the German attack was repelled and Admiral Hipper was damaged. She returned to Wilhelmshaven, where she was decommissioned. Admiral Hipper was not ready for service until January 1945, when she was used, partly repaired, to evacuate refugees and wounded troops from the Eastern Front. Admiral Hipper was scuttled in dock at Kiel Deutsche Werke yards on 2 May 1945. They provide a link to download the complete 20-page instruction set. There are also links to reviews, aftermarket parts, galleries and references for the Hipper Class heavy cruisers. Martin Quinn published a favorable In-Box Review on the New Jersey IPMS website (njipms.org). There are many well-done photos of the hull and deck parts and the nicely molded sprues. He points out the crispness of the moldings and the clarity of the instructions and his straightforward conclusion contained: “it’s an impressive looking model in the box, and one that looks it will, issues with the knock out pins and fit of the upper and lower hulls aside, build into an even more impressive model – especially with that camouflage!” Volker Helms delivered a thorough In-Box Review on the German-language IPMS Deutschland website (ipmsdeutschland.de) that provided a concise history of the Hipper. You get over a dozen high-resolution photos of the kit contents and his evaluation of the quality and detail of the parts. Throughout his review, he praises the model, saying: “With this kit, Trumpeter once again closes a gap on the model building market.” and “A very well made and very interesting kit for the advanced modeler.” Modelkit Stuff recorded an hour-long First Impressions Video on YouTube that should satisfy any and all curiosity about this kit, if you can make it through the whole thing. This kit is in a large well-decorated 25.5” x 9” x 3” box. As you can see from the pictures, the box is immaculate and still sealed with tape strips, so I consider it factory sealed and absolutely gift-ready. This item contains a complete injection molded model with about 400 grey plastic and three frets of photo etched metal parts along with a small decal sheet to make a detailed full-hull or waterline-hull replica of the German Heavy Cruiser Admiral Hipper as she appeared in 1941.
