TESS OF THE D’URBERVILLES by THOMAS HARDY Published by James R. Osgood, McIlvaine and Co., London 1892 Commonly known as the Fifth Edition of Hardy’s famous tale about the life, loves and tribulations of Tess Durbeyfield. It is the first single-volume edition of the novel which followed quickly upon the first edition of 1891 and further subsequent impressions of the triple decker publication during 1892. The first impression of the fifth edition was published in September 1892. This example is in a rather poor condition, but still a collectable volume. Vintage, pre-owned. No dust jacket. In original publisher’s tan cloth with floral design and titling to the spine. Gilt and titling somewhat faded. Boards have quite a bit of wear and some staining. Light staining and dark marks to rear board. Several ring stains to the front board and the cloth at the front joint is split from the bottom of the spine to about half way up with cloth fraying at the split. Some crinkling of the cloth at the fore edge of the rear board. Spine ends scuffed with splits and a little loss. A little scuffing from a bump at the top edge and small bumps to edges; corners bumped with card exposed and cloth fraying. Forward leaning. Hinge is fully cracked at the front end papers with webbing exposed. The front free end paper and front matter (including title page) are detached in a single block up to p. vi. The following few pages of the first gathering are loosening with one leaf (comprising the contents) almost completely detached. There are some scuff marks at the hinge of the first blank free end paper and I suspect a preceding blank front end paper may be missing. The hinge is partially cracked at the rear end papers. Boards rather slack. From the second gathering – signature B onwards – the block seems tolerably solid despite some cracked hinges here and there. A very few pages have small tears at the top hinge, almost certainly resulting from when the pages were cut. Internally there are occasional marks and spotting, mainly age-related, but overall the pages look good and clean. Somewhat dilapidated, but this is Hardy, and Tess, and the volume is undoubtedly of collectable value. pp 519, book measures approx. 8 x 5 ins UK return accepted if book returned in same condition as received within 30 days of receipt.
