COREOPSIS LANCELEAF PERENNIAL Coreopsis Lanceolata 55 Seeds Fresh Seeds for 2022 from The Brooklyn Botanical Garden Club FREE USA SHIPPING Coreopsis COREOPSIS LANCELEAF PERENNIAL Coreopsis Lanceolata Coreopsis Lanceleaf Coreopsis Lanceolata is a compact perennial native to North America. The seeds can be started outdoors in spring or fall, and also known as Lanceleaf Tickseed, Tickseed Coreopsis or Sand Coreopsis this variety grows 18-22 inches tall producing gorgeous, daisy-like, bright-yellow flowers on a top of lush, attractive foliage. The bloom period is from spring to all summer long, and the showy flowers are irresistible to butterflies. Coreopsis Lanceleaf is a reliable perennial for group or mass plantings, flower beds, foundations, borders, naturalized areas, rock gardens and containers. Coreopsis Lanceolata seeds have to be covered with soil but just barely, and this perennial Coreopsis grows best in full sun adapting easily to poor, dry soils in hot, humid climate. Coreopsis Lanceleaf is a superb cut flower. You can find a handful of coreopsis varieties for sale. For the best selection, start your plants from seed because many other varieties only last 3 years. Hardiness will vary with species and cultivar, and not all coreopsis varieties are perennial plants. LANCELEAF PERENNIAL Coreopsis Lanceolata is a rhizomatous perennial which always grows back, year after year, even in harsh winters. PLANT PROFILE Season: Perennial Height: 18-22 Inches Bloom Season: Spring-End to Fall Environment: Sun Soil Type: Average/Poor/Dry/Medium, well-drained, pH 5.8-6.8 USDA Zones: 3-10 PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS Sow Indoors: Winter/Spring (6-8 weeks before last frost) Sow Outdoors: Spring or Fall Seed Depth: 1/16 inch Germination Time: 21-28 Days Plants form a low mound of leathery green leaves, bearing many upright stems of large golden-yellow daisy-like flowers for several weeks, starting near the end of spring. Removing faded flowers regularly will encourage blooming to continue into the fall. This is a medium-sized selection that will not get overly tall or floppy. Plants are easily divided in early spring, and this should be done every 2 to 3 years. Tolerant of hot, humid summer climates. Excellent for borders, as well as in containers. Attractive to butterflies. Deer and rabbit resistant Flower’s Height 18-22 inches Full sun How to Grow Coreopsis Mature size varies with species, age, and growing conditions, but most coreopsis plants reach between 10 and 22 inches in height with a spread of about 12 to 24 inches. They tend to grow in clumps, but many varieties will self-sow throughout your garden. There are also a few that will spread by runners like Coreopsis Lanceolata. Deadheading will keep the plants blooming throughout the summer. Some of the smaller flowered varieties are difficult to deadhead and you may prefer to shear the plants, once the first flush of flowers fade. They will fill in quickly. Light Coreopsis will bloom best in full sun, but it can also be successfully grown in partial shade. The plants may get a bit lankier in partial shade, but they will adapt. In areas with intense dry, heat, coreopsis may even prefer some afternoon shade. Soil Most coreopsis varieties are very easy to grow and are not particular about soil quality or soil pH. They like well-draining soils and some, such as the thread leaf coreopsis, will tolerate dry, rocky soils. Heavy, wet soils can be problematic for the clump-forming varieties in winter; amending with compost will help. Water Coreopsis will need regular water when first planted until they are established. After that, they are drought tolerant. Water the plants deeply at least once a week to help new roots grow down deeply. Soil should be damp at about 1 inch below the soil surface (stick your finger in the soil to check.) Early morning watering is best, so the leaves have a chance to dry during the day. Common Name: large-flowered tickseed Type: Herbaceous perennial reviews: Location: Omaha,NE I have these planted with Stella d’oro lilies. The yellow colors match very well. The Early Sunrise blooms far surpass the lilies as they bloom constantly throughout the summer. Location: Candler, NC I love the Coreopsis of any variety. I happened to get this type this summer because it can re-grow year after year with or without seeding. I love them! Put them in pots and they are bursting out. Lots of beautiful golden flowers but you do have to keep dead heading to keep them coming. Today I am going to buy all the remaining plants they have left and plant them directly on my other property because they spread and will make excellent ground cover with lots of pretty blooms from spring to fall. Temperature and Humidity Coreopsis plants prefer a warm climate and because they are native to prairies and dry plains, a dry environment. Occasional wet weather won’t bother them, though. Fertilizer Fertilization of growing coreopsis plants is not necessary—in fact, too much fertilizer may inhibit flower production. If soils are already good, all you should need to do is add a little compost in the spring. Propagating Coreopsis Although they are rugged plants, they decrease in flowering after a few years. This is a signal that it is time to divide the plants or plant some new ones from seed. For perennial coreopsis, if they begin looking weak with fewer flowers after three years or so, divide them if needed in spring or early fall, this will insure plenty of flowers for years to come. Dig plants. Use a trowel to divide the plants into smaller sections. Replant and keep them well-watered until they are established and growing, which can take several weeks. Growing Coreopsis From Seeds Many, although not all, coreopsis varieties can be grown from seed, either started indoors 4 to 6 weeks before your last expected frost or direct seeded outdoors. Many will seed themselves however, some of the hybrid varieties do not grow true to the seed. Common Pests and Diseases For the most part, coreopsis plants grow problem free. In damp seasons they many fall prey to snails and slugs and fungal diseases can affect them. To avoid these problems as much as possible, give them plenty of air circulation and plant them in full sun. Tickseed, is a very floriferous perennial. Needs a sunny spot to really bloom a lot, and you should give it that extra room, because it tends to sprawl out in its second year. Culture Easily grown in dry to medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun. Thrives in poor, sandy or rocky soils with good drainage. Tolerant of heat, humidity and drought. Prompt deadheading of spent flower stalks encourages additional bloom and prevents any unwanted self-seeding. If left untouched it will continuously self seed itself and it may also spread by rhizomes. Plants are sometimes short-lived during harsh freezing winters and in this case it’s self-seeding properties will help to perpetuate a long-lasting spot in your garden. Plants may be cut back hard in the summer if foliage sprawls out too far. When grown in borders or other formal garden areas, division may be needed every 2-3 years to maintain robustness. May also be grown as annuals if preferred. Noteworthy Characteristics Coreopsis, is native to prairies, glades, open woods, thickets, roadsides and open ground in the southeastern U.S. from Florida to Texas and New Mexico north to Georgia, Missouri and Kansas. It typically grows in a clump to 18″ tall. Daisy-like single flowers (2-3″ diameter) feature deep yellow rays (notched at the tips) surrounding a darker golden yellow center disk. Flowers appear singly atop slender, erect stems rising to 2′ tall. Flowers typically bloom from late spring to late summer and sometimes into fall, though bloom period can be much shorter if spent flowers are not regularly deadheaded. Through introduction and garden escapes, this coreopsis has become established in the eastern and central U.S. well north of its native range. Any Problems No serious insect or disease problems. Foliage is susceptible to powdery mildew, leaf spot and rust. Compact plants are less likely to sprawl than taller varieties of Coreopsis. Crown rot may occur if grown in always moist, or poorly drained soils. Garden Uses: Borders. Also effective in naturalized areas, meadows, prairies or cottage gardens. A really good plant, for areas with poor dry soils.
