Mierce Miniatures is a new company that produces extremely high quality polyurethane resin miniatures for the Darklands wargame, as well as the BaneLegions miniature range and the Templar’s Forge hobby and accessories range. Darklands is a wargame set in a fantasy world not too different from our own. Beginning in the year AD 650, Darklands will combine various fantastical and historical elements found in northwest Europe in the so-called ‘Dark Ages’ in a wargame that will be intuitive, fresh and interesting. Much of its setting will be known to fantasy wargamers everywhere, and thus be very easily accessible. It also has the biggest gribblies you’ll see in any 30mm wargame! The immortal Emperor Constantine III of Byzantia may rule over a thousand realms but still he covets the power and the glory of his western ancestors at their height. He will stop at nothing to recover the lands and the strength the barbarians took from the emperors of the west and thus it is that his lumbering legions of man and fiend march further and harder than they have ever done, conquering new realms and re-conquering those that were lost, destroying the ancient enemies of Roma mercilessly, for his alliance with the pantheon opposed to the one God – the same one God that made the Romanii weak – demands such if they are to continue lending their diabolic power. The Byzantii, Constantine knows, are a proud and worthy race and they will not be found weak in the eyes of the Infernii; and nor will the Infernii – or indeed the upstart barbarians of the west – halt the rise of Byzantia and Constantine III. The second legion of Var, commanded by the venerable Titus Aurelius and honoured for its past glories under many previous legates and over countless seasons, is but one part of the greatest army the world has ever seen, yet it is an army reborn: for the innumerable legions of Byzantia are not only composed of the legionaries, auxilia and prefects once thought to be so resolute. Since the immortal Emperor rose to power the strength of the legions has been magnified greatly by the ravening, unspeakable horrors of Infernus as well as by the changes wrought by their mere presence beside human soldiers, but this is as it should be, for Titus – as the legatus of a legion raised where the Romanii conquered first, so many hundreds of years ago – knows that the history that is yet to be made will show that the weakness of his ancestors has stood to be corrected by an empire whose soldiers had faith in a stronger pantheon, a pantheon directly opposed to that of the one god. The Con I Modius, Legionarius Contubernium have been a while in coming, too; sculpted by Hector Moran and Luc Pinganaud from the artwork by Steve Pierce, these guys are the mainstay of the Byzantii and are armed with spatha (sword), scutum (shield) and pila (javelin). The legion mixes male and female warriors in the same units.
