A handwritten letter dated May 28, 1840 from Frederick Beasley, who served as Provost of the University of Pennsylvania from 1813 to 1828, to Benjamin Kissam in New York City. The letter is written in ink on a single sheet of paper measuring about 9 3/4″ x 7 11/16″, folded in half to make four pages (sides), each measuring about 4 7/8″ x 7 11/16″. The text of the letter is contained on the first two pages; the third page is blank; and the fourth page contains the letter’s address. Condition: The letter is in nice condition. The writing is clear and the paper is well-preserved. The letter was originally sealed with wax. The seal was broken (presumably by Kissam) and left a hole in pages 3-4. This hole does not affect the text of the letter, which was written on pages 1-2. The letter comes with a photocopy of an encyclopedia article on Beasley, which was with the letter in our father’s collection. Frederick (or Frederic) Beasley (1777-1845) served as the fifth provost of the University of Pennsylvania from 1813 to 1828. A graduate of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), he was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Church in 1801 and a priest the following year. He accepted the positions of provost and professor of moral philosophy in the College of the University of Pennsylvania in 1813. He served at Penn until 1828, during which time he raised the entrance age in the College from fifteen to sixteen years of age, increased the number of required years needed to earn a degree, and repeatedly preached against duels amongst Penn’s students. Beasley was awarded the honorary degree of doctor of divinity from Penn in 1815 and also from Columbia the same year. In this letter, Beasley asks Kissam to assist him in locating a printer for his book Atlantis and also in finding someone who would lend him $500 to cover the costs of publication. Our rough transcription follows: [page 1] Elizabethtown May 28, 1840 Private My Dear Sir — Since you are a scholar, & will soon become a man of business, let me levy a tribute upoh your talents & promises in life, by giving you a slight commission, wh, I trust, you will be able to execute without much trouble. I am determined to publish my “Atlantis,” as soon as possible, & with a view to this, I should like to meet with a Printer, who is a man of genius & taste & would know something more of the value of a work than the number of pages it would fill, & the facility with wh the characters in the manuscript would be deciphered. From reading a few numbers of The New World by Mr. Benjamin, & of Brother Jonathan, in wh Mr. Willis is engaged, I have concluded that these gentlemen might be of service to me. I should like to know, whether either of their Editors, has a press wh is prepared for the publication of a work of that large size in wh they now print [?] Duodecimos, bv=ut wh used to be called Octavos, & whether they would like to undertake such a job. Ask Mr. Willis, if he knows of a Printer in whom I could confide, to take charge of the Atlantis of wh he spoke favorably when he saw the first part of it in the Baltimore Museum? You may mention the name of the author, as a secret, & let him know the whole piece is now ready for the press, & you may ascertain his sentiments about the printing of it. [page 2] I shall consider, also, that you are a man of business & on the road to wealth, if you will find out some one from whom I could borrow $500 to pay the printer. Our estate here, as you know is in that unfathomable gulf called a suit in Chancery, & when I shall obtain this sum in hand, it is impossible to determine. I have waited for the money from that quarter, until I am tired, & I wish greatly to see this work in print, as I feel confident it will yield me something & perhaps introduce its brothers into good company. Write to me by Eliza, if you can, & keep what I write between ourselves. You may tell Miss Josephine, that I received the Churchman of last Saturday from her & four [?] hands, as I promised, & am much obliged to her; but that I would not p;ut her to the trouble of a regular transmission of it; but only requested, that she would send the numbers, when it happened to be convenient. With my best remembrance to all the family, believe me very sincerely yr friend Fr.
