eBay Important deeply carved large Walnut Panel of the 4 Humanities, museum quality. Beautifully designed and exquisitely carved. The carving is very deep and the figures are sanded as smooth as a polished stone, contrasting to the surface treatments where the carving is proudly exhibited in several different textures. We purchased the carving 5 years ago and have enjoyed it all these years. It is now fresh to the market and has not been shown since we purchased it from an estate auction in Cortland, NY. It was from the home of Lyman Wickwire, a 1941 graduate of Yale University. Mr. Wickwire was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War ll as a communications officer with the Seventh Fleet aboard the USS Wasatch. He was vice president of the former Wickwire Brothers Steel Co. in Cortland, N.Y. The carving was said to have been designed and carved by an art student at Cornell University who was Lyman Wickwire’s roommate when he was attending Cornell University sometime in the 1940’s. Measures 68 1/2″ (5′ 8 1/2″) wide x 44″ (3′ 8″ ) high overall x ( a very thick ) 3″ deep. Excellent structural condition, original patina. The panel is in excellent condition and structurally sound. The only minor apology to mention, solely for the sake of accuracy, are the two age cracks from seasonal wood movement, which do not detract from the visual impact. After almost 70 years since it was carved, any further wood movement is unlikely. It exhibits an almost luminescent original patina. This museum quality sculpture would enhance any Mid Century, Post Modern or Arts & Crafts collection or environment. The auctions opening amount is the only reserve, any final bids at or above the starting amount will be the fortunate new owner. A professional carver estimated that it would cost around $10,000.00 to $15.000.00 to carve it today, though old growth lumber with boards as wide as these panels is very rare today and lumber from younger trees would not exhibit the very attractive patina evident in this carving. All of the images were taken outdoors in natural light in the evening as the sun was low in the horizon. The image with the text at the bottom was taken after the sun set below the horizon. We will arrange shipping with a national shipper unless the buyer wishes to make their own arrangements. The carving can be picked up in person at our location in Santa Rosa, California or Pasadena, California at no cost. Since we do not know where the winning bidder is located, we have made an educated estimate for blanket shipping. If the shipping costs are less, we will refund the difference.
