It produces small purple to pink single, star shaped, five petaled flowers during the warm season, hence the common name of Lavender Star Flower or African Star Flower. The flower is followed by a shiny reddish-brown four lobed berry, accounting for the additional common name of Crossberry or Four Corners. It is a fast growing plant with medium sized, glossy green, rough textured leaves. Fat buds along the stems open slowly and last several days. The berries are generally considered edible. The taste is generally described as slightly sweet and tart. In the native habitat they are typically used to create fermented beverages or as flavoring in yogurt and/or goats milk.
