She attended the University of Oxford and was the first American woman to be awarded a degree with first-class honors after studying at St Hilda’s College, Oxford. She has been described as “a seminal influence on second-wave feminism”, and is best known for her book Sexual Politics (1970), which was based on her doctoral dissertation at Columbia University. Journalist Liza Featherstone attributes the attainment of previously unimaginable “legal abortion, greater professional equality between the sexes, and a sexual freedom” in part to Millett’s efforts. Kate Millett Born Katherine Murray Millett September 14, 1934 Saint Paul, Minnesota, U.S. Died September 6, 2017 (aged 82) Paris, France Occupation Writer educator artist activist Education University of Minnesota (BA) St Hilda’s College, Oxford (MA) Columbia University (PhD) Notable works Sexual Politics (1970) Spouse Fumio Yoshimura (m. 1965; div. 1985) Sophie Keir (see § Marriage) Academic background Influences Simone de Beauvoir The feminist, human rights, peace, civil rights, and anti-psychiatry movements were some of Millett’s principal causes. Her books were motivated by her activism, such as woman’s rights and mental health reform, and several were autobiographical memoirs that explored her sexuality, mental health, and relationships. In the 1960s and 1970s, Millett taught at Waseda University, Bryn Mawr College, Barnard College, and the University of California, Berkeley. Some of her later written works are The Politics of Cruelty (1994), about state-sanctioned torture in many countries, and Mother Millett (2001), a book about her relationship with her mother. Between 2011 and 2013, she won the Lambda Pioneer Award for Literature, received Yoko Ono’s Courage Award for the Arts, and was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame. Millett was born and raised in Minnesota, and then spent most of her adult life in Manhattan and the Woman’s Art Colony, established in Poughkeepsie, New York, which became the Millett Center for the Arts in 2012. Millett came out as a lesbian[3] in 1970, the year the book Sexual Politics was published. However, late in the year 1970 she came out as bisexual.[4][5] She was married to sculptor Fumio Yoshimura (1965 to 1985) and later, until her death in 2017, she was married to Sophie Keir. ***************************************************** Nancy Spero Nancy Spero (August 24, 1926 – October 18, 2009) was an American visual artist. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Spero lived for much of her life in New York City. She married and collaborated with artist Leon Golub. As both artist and activist, Nancy Spero had a career that spanned fifty years. She is known for her continuous engagement with contemporary political, social, and cultural concerns. Spero chronicled wars and apocalyptic violence as well as articulating visions of ecstatic rebirth and the celebratory cycles of life. Her complex network of collective and individual voices was a catalyst for the creation of her figurative lexicon representing women from prehistory to the present in such epic-scale paintings and collage on paper as Torture of Women (1976), Notes in Time on Women (1979) and The First Language (1981). In 2010, Notes in Time was posthumously reanimated as a digital scroll in the online magazine Triple Canopy. Spero has had a number of retrospective exhibitions at major museums. (1983) Tar Beach (1991) The French Collection (1991-1997) Movement Feminist art movement, Civil rights Awards 2009 Peace Corps Award Faith Ringgold’s artistic practice is extremely varied – from painting to quilts, from sculptures and performance art to children’s books. As an educator, she taught in both the New York City Public school system and at college level. In 1973, she quit teaching public school to devote herself to creating art full-time. In 1995 she was approached by ACA Galleries for exclusive representation and is represented by them to this day. Painting Ringgold began her painting career in the 1950s after receiving her degree. Her early work is composed with flat figures and shapes. She was inspired by the writings of James Baldwin and Amiri Baraka, African art, Impressionism, and Cubism to create the works she made in the 1960s. Though she received a great deal of attention with these images, many of her early paintings focused on the underlying racism in everyday activities; which made sales difficult, and disquieted galleries and collectors. These works were also politically based and reflected her experiences growing up during the Harlem Renaissance – themes which matured during the Civil Rights Movement and Women’s movement. ***************************************************** Muriel Castanis Muriel Brunner Castanis (1926 – 2006) was an American sculptor best known for her public art installments involving fluidly draped figures. Muriel Castanis Born Muriel Brunner September 27, 1926 New York City, US Died November 22, 2006 (aged 80) New York City, US Known for Sculpture Spouse George Castanis Born as Muriel Brunner on September 27, 1926 in New York City, the youngest of six children. She was raised in Greenwich Village and attended New York’s High School of Music and Art. Castanis did not begin her art career until 1964 at the age of 38, she was self-taught. Her image is included in the iconic 1972 poster Some Living American Women Artists by Mary Beth Edelson. Her 1980 exhibit at the OK Harris Works of Art in Manhattan led to her career breakthrough. Her work Corporate Goddesses (1982), features twelve fiberglass statues of faceless women standing 12 feet tall atop 580 California Street building, designed by architect Philip Johnson, have stirred varying interpretations, as viewers try to understand the symbolism. She died on 22 November 2006 at age 80 from lung failure in Greenwich Village neighborhood in New York City, and was survived by her husband George Castanis and their four children. ************************************************** May Stevens May Stevens (June 9, 1924 – December 9, 2019) was an American feminist artist, political activist, educator, and writer. May Stevens Born June 9, 1924 Boston, Massachusetts, U.S. Died December 9, 2019 (aged 95) Santa Fe, New Mexico, U.S. Education Massachusetts College of Art Art Students League Académie Julian Known for Painting Prints Notable work Big Daddy series (1968–1976) History Paintings series (1974–1981) Ordinary/Extraordinary series (1976–1991) Sea of Words series (1990) Movement Feminist art Early life and education May Stevens was born in Boston to working-class parents, Alice Dick Stevens and Ralph Stanley Stevens, and grew up in Quincy, Massachusetts. She had one brother, Stacey Dick Stevens, who died of pneumonia at the age of fifteen. By Stevens’s account, her father expressed his racism at home but “never said these things publicly, nor did he act on them—to my knowledge. But he said them over and over.” Stevens earned a B.F.A. at the Massachusetts College of Art (1946), and studied at the Académie Julian in Paris (1948) and Art Students League in New York City (1948). She was granted an MFA equivalency by the New York City Board of Education in 1960 and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Bunting Institute of Radcliffe College in 1988–89. In 1948 she married Rudolf Baranik (1920-1998), with whom she had one child. Stevens’ artwork frequently reflects her personal experiences and history. One instance of this is her “Sisters of the Revolution” series (1973-1976), which was inspired by her family’s history of radical activism. The series portrays women from various historical periods who participated in revolutionary struggles, and Stevens utilized her family photographs as references for her paintings. Through this artwork, Stevens aimed to shed light on the significant yet frequently overlooked roles that women have played in political movements. Stevens was a founding member of the feminist group the Guerrilla Girls.
