HistoryThe Osgood Bradley Car Company manufactured railway passenger cars and streetcars in Worcester, Massachusetts. HistoryBoston streetcar built by Osgood Bradley. The company was founded in 1822 to manufacture stagecoaches and sleighs. The company’s first railway passenger cars were built for the Boston and Worcester Railroad in 1835. During the American Civil War, the company produced gun carriages for the Union Army. Osgood Bradley was purchased by the Pullman Company in 1930.American Flyer cars The Worcester factory is popularly remembered as the manufacturer of the American Flyer streamlined passenger car during the 1930s. Walter Dorwin Teague designed a rounded aircraft-style body for railway cars manufactured of Cor-Ten steel. These cars weighed 15 tons less than conventional heavyweight steel cars. It was hoped these attractive lightweight cars might encourage public use of rail transportation while offering improved economy to the railway companies. New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad purchased the first of these cars in 1934. Other purchasers included Boston and Maine Railroad, Bangor and Aroostook Railroad, Kansas City Southern Railway, Seaboard Air Line Railroad, St. Louis Southwestern Railway, and Lehigh Valley Railroad. A. C. Gilbert Company, with New Haven trains running past their factory, decided to produce models of this car for their American Flyer toy train sets. Thousands of these toys were produced from 1946 to 1958; and railfans used the name American Flyer to describe the streamlined cars made by Osgood Bradley. They produce a highly detailed ” MUSEUM QUALITY MODEL ” check out the photos.Prototype History In order to attract customers back to the rails after the end of WWII, the New Haven decided to modernize the fleet with new lightweight passenger cars. In December 1945 a large order was placed with Pullman-Standard for a variety of car styles, including 103 coaches, 25 parlor cars, diners, grill diners, combination baggage buffet lounge/parlors, and two tavern lounge observation cars. These were produced in the old Osgood Bradley factory in Worcester, MA, so they bear more than a passing resemblance to the Osgood Bradley Lightweights delivered in the 1930s.Battery Installation: The batteries do not come installed. Judicious use of fingernails allows the user to remove the body without use of tools. There are some places to hold the frame while you separate the parts that allow you to get a good grip without damaging anything. Again, these cars have nice details, and you don’t want to break any parts off as you separate the body from the frame. Once that is done, however, installing the batteries isn’t too hard.Smooth Operation These cars use body-mounted knuckle couplers. The wheels are nice quality blackened metal and low-profile. They roll beautifully! Give them a little push and they just glide along the track. This will help if you like to run long consists. With the amount of detail on these, you should take care in handling them. The Model: High QualityFirst off, let me start by stating this model is simply one of the highest quality passenger cars available in HO Scale for North American prototypes. Nice Paint Job The paint is accurate in terms of color and precision. Lots of DetailMy two favorite parts of the model are the underframe and the diaphragms. The underframe is loaded with detail and a LOT of these parts are separately applied. I can imagine that the labor of assembling the underframe is likely as much or more than the work to assemble all other parts of the model. There are tanks, hoses, boxes, and all sorts of miscellaneous doodads. The diaphragms feature actual detailed passenger gates as well as very cool springs (not actual springs – but rather plastic pieces to emulate the springs on the prototype). They also feature black sides that again make it obvious how much labor went into these models.Grab-Iron Parts These cars also have another feature Grab-iron detail parts. I know this is fairly common with newer high quality models, but the impressive part to me is that none of the grab rails on either side of the doors seem to show any glue marks. Grab irons are easily the most visible detail part on the model, because they are on the sides, hence it is nice to see that the folks at the Chinese Rapido factory really understand the value of careful work on the assemble of the car bodies.The molding of the interior is exceptional. I especially appreciated the toilet bowl in the lavatory! Along with the ROUNDED MIRRORS on the Bulkheads of the CoachThe HO car is built primarily of plastic and features an exceptional amount of separately applied parts, including a fully detailed underbody. All the printing is crisp and straight. There’s sharp color separation between the stripes, and all the warning stencils match prototype photos.These fully assembled HO Scale cars feature scale dimensions and rivet details, factory-installed side door handrails, complete end, underbody and roof detail, scale set-back windows, working diaphragms, car name and number decals, correct trucks with RP-25 metal wheels for each car, factory-installed electrical pickups, and working knuckle couplers.
