This tall German fisherman handcrafted smoker is in pristine condition! To make him “smoke” for you, gently pull his legs off from his body and place incense on the little metal plate, then place his body back on the legs. Next, sit back and enjoy the woody scent of the incense along with the fun of seeing smoke come from his mouth! In his left hand, he’s carrying a fishing pole and in his right hand, he’s carrying the 2 fish he’s caught. Notice all the details: the way his hair pokes out from under his hat; his mustache that’s twirled on each end; his pink cheeks; his buttons, belt, vest and fishing boots. He’s taller than a lot of smokers. Most of the smokers I found posted are either about 7” tall or the size is not mentioned. This guy measures almost 11” tall! Also, I could find many duplicates of certain types of smokers, but was unable to find another one like this on eBay or Google, which makes me think this particular design may be somewhat rare. Frequently displayed with nutcrackers, German smokers are often associated with Christmas. Gold, frankincense and myrrh were the 3 gifts the wise men were said to have brought to baby Jesus, and some people burn frankincense in memory of that event. This smoker was crafted by Christian Ulbricht & Co. in the Erzgebirgsche region of former East Germany. The first known “smoker” was actually made from dough around 1850 in Heidelberg, Germany. Later carved from wood, these beautifully-crafted figures have since become cherished all over the world! Photos 8 & 9 show the difference in his colors between using a flash or no flash. I mostly chose the “no flash” photos because they sometimes made big splashes of light that obscured some portion of the photo. But I liked photo 9 (flash) that showed the colors more clearly than the non-flash option (photo 8). We were given this as a gift a few years ago. I chose to describe it as “new, other” because it has never been used and fits e-Bay’s description for “new, other” as being “an item in excellent, new condition with no wear.”
