Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome. If you are looking for something over the top, rare and usable for any live event…this Astatic “Tempo” 888 model mic just might do the trick? Pic # 2 is of an old Astatic advertisement but this is only for show…not part of the sale. I should start by saying that this is only the 3rd Astatic 888 I have ever come across and couldn’t wait to get my hands on the very first I got a year ago. I love working on a new mic for the first time and didn’t know what to expect of this oddity. I’m not a big fan of Astatic as I always thought their designs as bland and a little boring but this 888 mic is absolutely an exception. I kind of think as the 888 as the equivalent of The Ford Edsel. This mic was a revolutionary design for Astatic in the 1950’s and they were trying to portray a very modern look for the growing company to compete with the heavy hitters like E.V and Shure Brothers. The 888 (as well as all the “Futura” series) was supposed to be that mic but it seems it was too extreme looking…or perhaps just too expensive. You can see on the box that this model sold for $110.00 which was a large chunk of change back in the mid 1950’s. Long story short…this mic was a short production model and didn’t seem to sell very well which is why you probably don’t see to many of these around…much like The Ford Edsel. This was an expensive, quality Astatic microphone in it’s day. Pic # 3 is an actual Astatic catalog that’s included showing the mics basic specs and characteristics. You’ll notice this mic could also be used as a lavalier mic and comes with it’s original necklace (pic # 4) to hold the mic but this can also be used with it’s stock mic clip. That being said…this mic is in good overall physical and excellent working condition. The mic actually sounds fantastic and set at High Z. Signal is 100% strong! It was intended to be used as a general purpose mic. Astatic states it was ideal for radio broadcasting, studio and deluxe PA applications. It has a classic “rockabilly” sound and won’t disappoint if that’s what you are shooting for but it can be changed to Low impedance as well if you need something with more bass. It does have a higher pitched sound so this might be good as a harp mic as well. The mic had a very modern flair for it’s day and looks a bit like the modern stick mics you now see. There is quite a bit of wear on the painted handle. Some small scuffs, scratches and spots where the paint chipped off. Not to say you can’t have this re-painted. The front screen looks great. The mic is free of dents or fractures. It’s appx 5 3/4 inches long and has a slender, easy to hold metal body. Let the pictures be your guide please. You’ll notice this has a very unique XLR cable where the mic clip actually goes. This is the only mic I have ever seen where the mic clip was designed to go on the detachable cable instead of the mic. The cable was like 20 feet long but had several spots of damage so it was shortened to just 5 inches and a quality Switchcraft male XLR end connector was installed. It’s much easier to store in the box now and far more practical. Simply attach any longer XLR cable of choice to the existing short one provided and you’re in business. The original data sheet is included and has gobs of info. The all metal mic clip comes with the 888 which works great for this mic giving a firm grip and allowing a wide degree of tilt up and down. The clip actually pivots in any direction and the tension holds it firmly in place. The clip is in great condition and has the RCA style adapter on the bottom so that this can be used with any American desk or floor stand. The original hard to find box box shows some typical wear but works great and a good place to store the mic when not in use. If you love having a mic that few others have and can actually use…this 888 will not disappoint. MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS NOT PART OF THIS SALE…FOR DISPLAY PURPOSES ONLY.
